Abstract

Religious tolerance is an essential foundation for maintaining harmony within Indonesia’s diverse society. Schools play a strategic role in shaping tolerant attitudes, with Islamic Religious Education (Pendidikan Agama Islam [PAI]) teachers serving as central actors in this process. This study aims to identify and describe the strategies employed by PAI teachers in instilling ukhuwah (brotherhood) and religious tolerance values at UPTD SMKN 1 Aralle, Mamasa Regency. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation involving PAI teachers, students, school principals, and curriculum representatives. Data analysis followed an interactive model consisting of data reduction, data display, verification, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that PAI teachers play vital roles as value educators, moral guides, role models, learning facilitators, and conflict mediators. Teachers integrate the values of ukhuwah and tolerance into lesson planning and learning activities through discussion methods, dialogue, case studies, habituation practices, and moral guidance. Despite challenges such as limited instructional time and environmental influences, teachers consistently reinforce these values through continuous guidance and exemplary behavior. The study concludes that these strategies foster active forms of ukhuwah and religious tolerance characterized by cooperation, mutual respect, and harmonious social relationships among students of different religions. These findings highlight the importance of integrating ukhuwah values alongside tolerance education to strengthen character development in multicultural school environments.
